    • Refer to the article in CNA. Only 59% of child born are from both singaporean parents... the figure will probably only get lower as time goes by as we welcome more foreign influx.

This makes me wonder, does the gahmen welcome Fts frm PRCs, izzit purely due to economical reasons... or are there more unspoken reasons....

Singaporean women should be worried about the current situation.

      http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/364675/1/.html

SINGAPORE: 39,490 babies were born in Singapore last year, but not all were born of Singaporean parents.

In fact, only 59 per cent of them have both a Singaporean mother and a Singaporean father. But if births where at one parent is a foreigner were included, then the figure goes up to 82 per cent.

Perhaps what is of great significance is that records of Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) show that Singapore men fathered 75 per cent of all babies born here, while Singapore women account for just 65 per cent.

Climbing the career ladder is one reason sociologists give for the low fertility rate among Singapore women, particularly among those with degrees.

Associate Professor Angelique Chan, assistant head of Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore, said: "A woman puts a lot of effort, time, overtime, into her work in her early 20s, mid-late 20s, then she gets to be about 30 years old and then she is thinking about marriage but it's hard for her to find someone (at that age). The older you get, the more entrenched you get in your lifestyle....and it gets harder to adapt to another person."

If Singapore men are fathering more babies than Singapore women are giving birth to, then who is delivering the goods?

6,071 babies were born to Singapore fathers whose wives are Malaysians, Indonesians, Chinese nationals, or are from other countries in the region.

Some women from further afield have also been increasing Singapore's birth rate.

Singapore's Total Fertility Rate - which measures the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime - currently stands at 1.29.

Among the Malay and Indian communities, their birth rates have fallen steadily from year 2000 to 2006.

While the birth rate among the Chinese community has crept up very slightly, it still remains the lowest of all the three races.

    • marry a woman local or otherwise is to want to live together.  She's not a factory. Having a baby is not for the baby bonus, carry on the line or to help the economy. But it is out of love that the parents choose to have kids. The changes in life style and increase in costs, lost of local women are putting in there weight to help their husband bring back more bacon. There is also NATO efforts towards supporting parenthood and work-life balance and people are now expected to work more for less and any complains are not tolerated as the employee can easily be replaced with FT. Increasingly, there are also shifts in society towards aging and attitudes in terms of children, and towards the society's ability to sustain the next generation given the current policies and possible future of Singapore.  So its not just a simple factor. But its no big deal of local men likes to marry foreign girls. As seen from the attitudes of certain group that they prefer lower educated, submissive women to feel good about themselves. Perhaps this is better for the local women to not marry such kinds of local men.No point spending her life working side by side with a local man with such a thinking and at the end , these men not getting the "submissiveness" from the local women will head to Batam and other places for their Submissive fix with a foreign woman.

What's there for Singapore women to worry about? From the article it seems that they themselves make the choice of career over family.

    • Article says there that Singaporean Women are not giving birth as much as Singaporean men are fathering children. So their choices are statistically significant to say that the men are faring better at fathering (with foreign women) than local women.

"If Singapore men are fathering more babies than Singapore women are giving birth to, then who is delivering the goods?"

In Life, people makes choices so When it is past the fertile age of giving birth, then it would be late.

    • can you imagine that of 41% of births here, a foreigner is involved? i think this is by far the highest in the world.

also out of the 59% singaporean parents i wonder what % are chinese? hahah.

seriously. i think sg is one, if not the most sexually conservative countries in the world. thanks to poor govt policies, high cost of children, conservative culture (for chinese anyway) and stressful lifestyles.

    • Seems that what makes Singapore "Singapore" will be destroyed in a decade or two, all thanks to PAP regime.

Can go back to Malaysia by that time, I think.

I will be a malayan chinese minority again.

      Straits born chinese.

      Yeah!
